In a bid to improve on the aesthetic appeal of Edo State, address the potential health and environmental hazards associated with improper waste disposal, the Edo State Waste Management Board has embarked on a clean-up intervention exercise to consolidate the effort of road sweepers in the metropolis.
Waste management is a crucial aspect of urban development, and the Edo State Waste Management Board recognises the importance of keeping the streets and public spaces clean. The exercise in Benin City is a direct response to the growing concerns about litter and waste accumulation in the area.
The clean-up intervention exercise is one of the systematic approaches to removing waste and ensuring proper disposal. These include sweeping the streets, collecting garbage, and clearing debris or obstructions. The Board is also implementing measures to prevent further waste accumulation by educating the public on proper waste disposal techniques and assigning supervisors to monitor strategic locations where there are high incidences of indiscriminate waste dump.
Apart from improving the aesthetic appeal of the areas, the Board emphasis that littering and waste accumulation can lead to the breeding of disease-carrying pests, contamination of water sources and air pollution, which pose risks to the well-being of residents.
The clean-up intervention exercise also serves as a reminder to residents, visitors, motorists, traders, amongst others, the importance of individual and collective responsibility in waste management. The Board holds that it is not solely the responsibility of governments to keep the environment clean but also the obligation of every individual to dispose waste properly.
This is a commendable initiative that demonstrates the Board’s commitment to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for residents and visitors of the State. By creating awareness and providing the necessary infrastructures for proper waste management, the Board is urging stakeholders to actively participate in the waste management scheme.
