Edo State Waste Management Board: Turning Vision into Action for a Cleaner, Healthier Edo.

Not too long ago, certain streets, markets, and bypasses in Edo bore the signs of neglect littered black spots, overgrown verges, and clogged drains that made life uncomfortable for residents. Today, that story is changing. From the heart of Benin City to the remote corners of Edo North and Central, the transformation is visible cleaner streets, tidier markets, restored bypasses, and a renewed sense of pride in our environment.

This change is no accident. It is the result of deliberate planning, tireless execution, and the shared vision of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whose mission is to make Edo the cleanest state in Nigeria. That vision has been brought to life through the dynamic leadership of the Edo State Waste Management Board’s Managing Director, Amb. Dr. Lucky Enehita Inegbenehi, whose passion for service has turned words into action.

A Coordinated Drive for Statewide Cleanliness

In recent months, the Board has rolled out a series of high-impact interventions that have touched every part of the state:

  • 90 consecutive days of waste evacuation in targeted areas, clearing long-standing black spots.
  • Market cleanups at all Markets in Benin such as Oregbeni Market, Evbuotubu Market, restoring order and hygiene for traders and shoppers.
  • Special interventions across Edo
  • Sanitation exercises at both major and commercial corridors.
  • Waste clearance operations in Ekpoma (Esan West LGA) and Ubiaja (Esan South LGA), ensuring rural and semi-urban areas benefit equally from the cleanup drive.
  • Full restoration and cleaning of major bypasses, including Auchi Bypass, Sapele Road Bypass, and Agbor Road Bypass, removing illegal dumps and enhancing the city’s gateways.

Operational Innovations for Lasting Impact

Understanding that sustainable change requires strong systems, the Board has:

  • Equipped street sweepers with new brooms for improved daily work.
  • Installed rolling waste bins in strategic points for easy access to waste disposal.
  • Deployed new trucks to Edo Central and Edo North to decentralize waste collection.
  • Reintroduced the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise to promote a culture of cleanliness.
  • Launched the TROID Taskforce to tackle illegal waste dumping and environmental violations.
  • Maintained and upgraded dumpsites to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Discouraged street trading in unauthorized locations to reduce littering and traffic obstruction.

Partnerships that Multiply Results

The Board has actively partnered with reputable private firms to bring additional expertise and resources into Edo’s environmental management efforts. These collaborations have enhanced operational capacity, accelerated project delivery, and ensured that environmental gains are sustained.

Recognition of Excellence

In acknowledgment of his dedication, Amb. Dr. Lucky Enehita Inegbenehi has been honored with multiple prestigious awards in recent months. These accolades are a reflection of his hands-on approach, strategic thinking, and relentless pursuit of a cleaner Edo State.

Looking Ahead

With the continued support of the Governor, the Edo State Waste Management Board remains committed to ensuring that this momentum is not lost. The vision is clear, an Edo where every community, market, street, bypass, and neighborhood is clean, healthy, and dignified.

A cleaner Edo is not just a promise, it’s a reality in motion, and together, we will keep it that way.
